The Denmark international is wanted by Real Madrid this summer, with AS reporting that the Spanish club have already reached a verbal agreement with the 27-year-old.

However, chairman Daniel Levy has, per the report, slapped a £140m asking price on the player as he looks to keep the midfielder at the club.

And he is said to be hopeful that Eriksen will turn in a man-of-the-match display when Spurs take on Liverpool in Madrid on June 1 as they look to become champions of Europe; Levy believes that such a performance would add £20m to his price-tag.

The attacking midfielder’s current contract expires at the end of next season, leading to the prospect of Spurs losing one of their prized assets on a free transfer.

But Football Insider claim that Levy is hoping that his huge valuation will force Eriksen and his party back into negotiations over a new deal.

Saga set to develop

It remains to be seen if a saga will develop this summer.

Real are unlikely to pay between £140m and £160m for a player who could be available for nothing in 12 months.

Levy knows that; he is not stupid but he is a remarkably astute businessman who attempts to ensure that the club receive as much value as possible from buying clubs.

Eriksen, though, may well get frustrated if a transfer isn’t struck and it is a high-risk strategy with three possible outcomes.

He could potentially, of course, sign a new contract; he could hand in a transfer request in a bid to force through a move this month; or, the nuclear scenario – he could wait out his deal and simply depart on a free next summer.

It remains to be seen where the cards will fall.
